Head a Committee
The DAHF has Educational, Marketing/Media, Legislative and Fundraising committees. Perhaps you’d like to volunteer on our Silent Auction Committee, start a Bunco group in your neighborhood, participate in a health fair or volunteer on our committee for our Run/Walk to OverCome Ovarian Cancer.
Write Your Senator
Advocate for an early screening test and sound genetic testing for ovarian cancer by making a legislative visit to your local Congressman. Invite your Senator or Congressman to an event during Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month in September. You can have an influence about what your congressional representative does about ovarian cancer!
During the last few hours of the 109th Congress, Johanna’s Law, the Gynecologic Cancer Education and Awareness Act was passed. Johanna’s Law is named after Johanna Silver Gordon, a health conscious former public school teacher who died from ovarian cancer. Her sister Sheryl Silver, the creator of the Bill, has been working along with ovarian cancer advocates for over three years to bring Johanna’s Law to the attention of Capitol Hill. The President of the United States signed the bill into law on January 12, 2007. Johanna's Law will authorize a national gynecologic cancer early detection and awareness campaign directed at women and their physicians. The Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) will carry out a national campaign to increase women’s awareness and knowledge of gynecologic cancers.
Activities:
- Maintaining and distributing a supply of written materials that provide information to the public about gynecologic cancers.
- Developing and placing Public Service Announcements intended to encourage women to discuss their risks for gynecologic cancers with their physician, and informing the public about the availability of written materials and how to obtain them.
